Good afternoon, I'm @KevsXe and I'll be your guide through today's stage through the picturesque French mountains. #TDF2016— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
Once he'd got his geography issues out of the way, Kev proceeded to fill us in on events so far:What the hell d'you mean it's in Spain? The Vuelta's not for another two months!— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
Meanwhile, Erviti took a tumble and Kev got all health and safety conscious:Anyway, to business. Pinot has taken the first climb of the day, Port de la Bonaigua, ahead of de Gendt, as the #Maillotapois fight hots up.— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
Erviti has gone down while carrying water for Movistar. Replays look like he just wasn't paying attention and rode off the road. #TDF2016— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
While Kev went to get his hi-vis jacket and hard hat, a sizeable break consisting of some big names ploughed on, including the Tour's latest rap star, apparently:We're seeing a group of white water rafters crash into each other as they focus more on the TV helicopter. PAY ATTENTION, PEOPLE! #TDF2016— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
At the other end of the race, another big name was continuing to struggle:No GC threats in the lead group, but Pinot, de Gendt, Sagan, Herrada, LL Cool Sanchez, Majka, Costa, Gallopin and Dumoulin in there. #TDF— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
And then:Contador's dropped back to the team car for the 4th or 5th tome today. Not enjoying himself out there, isn't Alberto. #TDF2016— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
There were no such trouble for Thomas de Gendt, though, as the fight to be the King of the Mountains raged on:ALBERTO CONTADOR HAS WITHDRAWN. #TDF2016— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
Which was the signal for Kev to impart some local history knowledge on us:Awesome sprint for the Port del Cantó, as de Gendt holds off Pinot in the battle for #PolkaDotJersey points #TDF2016— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
There was also an intermediate sprint to contest. I say 'contest', but that's being kind. Much to the surprise of nobody:We're now in Andorra, by the way. A country famous for being the mountains neither France nor Spain wanted. #TDF2016— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
Coppel then decided to attack, taking Grmay with him, while Dr. Robinson used advanced timing technology to gauge what advantage they'd gained:Sagan takes the sprint more or less uncontested. In other news, the road is grey. #TDF2016— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
Which wasn't big enough, no matter how accurate, as they were caught just before the climb of the Cote de la Comella, the summit of which de Gendt again pipped Pinot to, before jumping 25 seconds clear of the rest.By my count (using a fan wearing red as a reference point), those two have 13 seconds on the group. #TDF2016— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
While Sky maintained a high pace at the front of the peloton, the break hit the Col de la Beixalis and soon caught and dispatched of de Gendt. Although the Belgian wasn't the only one having trouble ascending:
With conditions reportedly deteriorating at the finish, Kev did his best John Ketley impression, which wasn't much use, to be honest:A hot air balloon was supposed to take off as the helicopter looked on, but failed. Bad week for inflatables at the Tour.— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
Pinot was the first to go over the summit, before things started to get interesting:Reports of rain at the finish. I'd stick my hand out to check but I'm 800 miles away. #TDF2016— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
Several attacks and counter attacks coming in the leading group, which still has 8 minutes over the yellow jersey group. #TDF2016— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
And Tom of Windmill wasn't stopping for anyone, as he built on his lead. Another person not stopping for anyone was George Bennett:Tom Dumoulin is going for it alone. He's got 11.2km to go and a 20" gap. Don't mention that race last September yet. #TDF2016— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
Dumoulin was now flying:Dumoulin is extending his lead as George Bennett flattens a fan who stepped out at a corner! Bennett didn't even flinch. #TDF2016— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
Dumoulin looking comfortable as he passes a berk in a parrot costume. No avian antics today, although Froome is further down the mountain.— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
While Dumoulin plugged away at the front, the GC group started to come to life:Aforementioned berk. #TDF2016 pic.twitter.com/PM88rt3Szd— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
Attack from Porte now as Martin is reabsorbed by the pack. Aru has been dropped! #TDF— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
The attacks were relentless and so was the weather:FROOME AND QUINTANA ATTACK! #TDF— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
Someone who could get in and dried off, however, was the stage winner:It's spittin'. #TDF2016 pic.twitter.com/qy9PkpYxYv— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
As the rest of the break trickled in, in dribs and drabs, the action was still frenetic in the select group of GC riders:The group's all back together. But Tom Dumoulin is still out front alone, and wins the stage to get out of the rain first! #TDF2016— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
Before one impressive young rider made a statement as the group crossed the line:So many brief attacks. Froome, Quintana, Porte, Yates and Martin make an elite group of five under the flamme rouge. #TDF2016— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
[CORR: It wasn't Valverde, it was Herrada. Blame Kev.]Adam Yates launches a late sprint, beats Froome and Quintana. Possibly a second gap to Porte, Valverde and Martin, we'll wait and see. #TDF— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
And, with that, we head into a rest day. We'll be back with live updates on Tuesday. Before then, though, we'll let Kev pay tribute to TLG's latest favourite person:
Stage results:Before we go, a nod to @AdamYates7, who put in another great ride to maintain 2nd in GC to the rest day. #YatesWeCan pic.twitter.com/M8JLFwYSEA— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) 10 July 2016
