As we joined the stage, the Tourmalet had already been passed, and had had some pretty significant effects on the shape of the race.#TDF truly in the mountains now, @AndrewSteel88 will be Sherpa Tenzing to your Edmund Hillary for stage 8, from 2pm. pic.twitter.com/V9iHLEWP2U— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016
There are three leaders on the road, Thibaut Pinot - looking to regain some of the time he lost yesterday - Rafal Majka and Tony Martin #tdf— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016

Pinot was first over the Tourmalet as he shifted his focus to the King of the Mountains jersey having lost a big chunk of time yesterday. But the real news of note was the yellow jersey dropping way off the back of the peloton, the start of a tough day in the saddle for van Avermaet, whose gloomy predictions that he wouldn't hold the lead through the Pyrenees were proved to be dead right. Not in the peloton, however, is the #YellowJersey of Greg van Avermaet, nor Julian Alaphilippe or Vincenzo Nibali. #tdf #TDF2016— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016
We're only onto the second climb of the day, and the race has fragmented already. Sky are driving what remains of the peloton hard. #tdf— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016
The virtual polka dot jersey was Pinot's reward for his early stage efforts, although he would not keep it to the end of the stage. Meanwhile, van Avermaet's struggles meant the virtual yellow jersey for a man who's rapidly achieving the sought-after status of TLG favourite.Pinot is also first over the Hourquette d'Ancizan, with the peloton 1'18" behind them. #TDF2016 #tdf— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016
The #YellowJersey group of van Avermaet and Nibali are just over 7'32" off the leaders. #tdf— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016
— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016Yates We Can. Greg van Avermaet could count himself lucky in one respect, too, as while he was losing the lead, unlike some he still had Nibbles close at hand.
It's not easy, being a TLG reporter. It's even harder being Mark Cavendish, as our jersey watch had to look a hell of a long way back for the green jersey wearer. We've got 50km to go, the gap is down to 1'04" and I'm struggling with the distinct lack of #TourSnacks. #TDF2016 #tdf— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016
Cav at least had Bernie Eisel for company, who would eventually drag him onto the back of the gruppetto, finishing just inside the cut. Morkov was not so lucky.Cav is 23'45" behind and will be in a battle to make the cut. Not as much of a battle as Morkov, though, who is even further back. #tdf— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016
Back at the front, struggles for Thibaut Pinot. The first abandonment of the Tour: Morkov has called it a day. An impressive showing from a man who took a big tumble in the opener #tdf— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016
Pinot dropping back was the end of the breakaway group, as Sky drove the peloton on to catch them just before the penultimate summit. After which, Andy's pre-race predictions reared their ugly head again.PINOT CRACKS! The Frenchman can't keep up the pace and starts moving backwards and into the peloton, followed by Tony Martin. #TDF2016 #tdf— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016
Kelderman falls on the descent. #CurseOfSteel strikes again. A teammate is on hand to give him a bike, but he'll struggle to catch up. #tdf— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016
Andy was also struggling. It appears his tyre just rolled off his front wheel. There's a mechanic somewhere requiring a clean set of underwear... #tdf #TDF2016— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016
Get that man a Twix. Although not from Limoges, apparently. They keep saying how much the riders are suffering, but I'm starving here, with no food and ages until tea time. Who's the real victim, Ned?— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016
— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016Having never been to Limoges we can neither condone nor denounce such a statement. Before the serious end of the stage comes around, here's Chris Froome being annoyed not by fuck, but by cluck.
Right, game time. Normally someone of Majka's calibre being dropped off the lead group would be big news, but as he went backwards, it started getting very interesting at the front. To be honest, we had Chris Froome down more as a specialist climber rather than a puncher... #tdf #TDF2016 https://t.co/MsowuCgyCb— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016

The TLG BIG NEWS CAPS LOCK was in full use there, as Froome kicked on after punching out earlier, going down the descent solo, but not everyone was looking at his speed.FROOME ATTACKS OVER THE TOP! He takes max points over the summit and just keeps going! #TDF2016 #tdf— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016
Froome's nipples seemed to have the beating of the rest of the pack, as he extended his lead over 20 seconds at one point in the descent, but it then began to steadily drop again as Quintana, Bardet, Rodriguez, Aru et al gave chase. Could anyone catch him before the finish?Froome's bodyshape is impressive. Like he's trying to steer the handlebar with his nipples. #tdf #TDF2016 pic.twitter.com/IxoYoHVZok— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016
No. Dan Martin and Joaquin Rodriguez took second and third, so with time bonuses Froome made up 23 seconds on his GC rivals, and with van Avermaet losing all of his six minute lead and then some, the path was clear for Froome to take the overall lead. And Froome takes the stage after a ballsy surprise attack on the descent of the Col de Peyresourde! #TDF2016 #tdf— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016
The win gives Froome the #YellowJersey & Adam Yates retains his #WhiteJersey. All eyes on Cav making the time to keep his #GreenJersey. #tdf— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016
A good day all round for the Brits, then, as Yates also retained second overall behind Froome. The new leader wondered aloud if he'd taken too much out of himself on the descent before a tough Stage 9. Find out with our live coverage of it, coming soon to a Twitter feed near you. As long as you follow us.Rafal Majka, meanwhile, claims the #PolkadotJersey.— The Laughing Group (@Laughing_Group) July 9, 2016
